Ingredients

Marinade

  • 500 g steak thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion thinly sliced
  • 2-3 green onions minced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 small carrot julienned
  • 1 small pear grated (or use pear juice)
  • 1 small kiwi grated (or use kiwi juice)
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp mirin (rice wine) or dry white wine
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil for cooking

Instructions

Prepare the Marinade:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the grated pear, grated kiwi, minced garlic, soy sauce, sugar, mirin (or white wine), sesame oil, and black pepper. Mix well until the sugar is dissolved.

Marinate the Beef:

  • Place the thinly sliced beef in a large resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish.
  • Pour the marinade over the beef, ensuring it's well coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish with plastic wrap.
  • Refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours, or ideally, overnight for the best flavor. Turn the meat occasionally to ensure even marination.

Cook the Bulgogi:

  • Heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or a grill pan over medium-high heat.
  • Add the marinated beef to the hot pan, spreading it out evenly.
  • Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until the beef is cooked through and has a nice caramelized char.
  • Add the thinly sliced onion and julienned carrot to the pan and sauté for an additional 2-3 minutes until they start to soften.

Finish and Serve:

  • Sprinkle the chopped green onions and toasted sesame seeds over the Bulgogi.
  • Serve hot over steamed rice or in lettuce wraps as ssam (Korean lettuce wraps).
  • Bulgogi can be garnished with additional sesame seeds or a drizzle of sesame oil for extra flavor.
Enjoy your homemade Bulgogi! It's a flavorful and satisfying dish with a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors.
